We caught up with Oakland rapper Ras Ceylon and talked to him about his new album ‘Scientific Non Fiction’. It’s his second album and it looks to be a monster.
Among the stand out tracks are cuts he did with Stic Man of dead prez called ‘Better Be Ready’, ‘The Damage’ featuring Tragedy Khadafi and ‘Many Levels’ featuring Bay Area icons Askari X and Taje of Souls of Mischief.
The album is a masterpiece full of socially conscious songs that keep you uplifted and in conversation without being preachy. There is nothing trite about Ras Ceylon and his music. He’s a man of the people who wants us all to advance. His album takes bold steps and will not disappoint.
As for our interview, we started off talking to Ras Ceylon about his background which Sri Lankan and how that culture is often overlooked and misunderstood. We talked to him about him embracing the Rastafarian religion and how it influenced his music.
We also built with Ras about his revolutionary take on politics and why he found it important to hook up with people like Chairman Fred Hampton Jr of the POCC and have him featured on the intro of this album.
Ras is a force to be wreckon with in the years to come. And for those who feel like Hip Hop has lost its sense of adventure and commitment to politics, Ras Ceylon puts those nagging doubts to rest.

EveryUrbanThing.com reviews Ras Ceylon’s new Album
October 23, 2008
Hailing from the Cali Coast, Hip Hop genius Ras Ceylon, introduces Scientific Non Fiction, an album combining a fusion of reggae and Hip Hop.
Lyrically mastered, this conscious inspired album is explosive with deep meaning and heavy beats. Rapping about things that matter in today’s world, Ras Ceylon has constructed a master piece that will be appreciated by hip hop lovers who want a mix they can chill out to whilst taking them to another level of thinking. With appearances from some of the leaders in the rap world, Stic.man of Deadprez, Tradegy Khadafi and Askari X, this is an album put together with succinct thought.
The opening track Betta Be Ready prepares listeners for the beats they can expect to hear from the 16 track album including intros. Although primarily reggae influenced, the album takes many other directions with Western Frontsounding very much like American hip hop, whilst the tone of Dopest Ethiopian is more mellow and lyrically softer.April 21st is also another track you can’t fail to miss as the Jimmy Cliff sampler kicks in at the beginning.
This is an album of conscious Hip Hop, with Jamaican and American influences. Generally, the album is up tempo with the essence of reggae music clearly defined in each track. As his most epic album to date, this is definitely one to add to the Hip Hop collection.
