On Thursday, November 20, revolutionary and powerhouse independent rapper, Immortal Technique, will perform live on stage at DNA Lounge, returning to the Bay to raise funds for a badly needed orphanage and medical center in war torn Afghanistan. Known for his fiery assaults on corruption, racism, classism and oppression, Technique has also garnered a reputation for backing his politics with action, historical context and personal responsibility.
Working closely with human rights advocacy organization, Omeid International, Tech’s performance raises funds earmarked for developing the Amin institute in Kabul where some of the two million orphaned and 60,000 homeless children of Afghanistan will receive full scale rehabilitation from the devastating effects of war. The Institute, which is set to begin operating in March 2009, will provide safe housing, education, medical and psychological care and some sense of hope to twenty of these displaced children.
Wars and other conflicts, regardless of their political meaning or benefit always leave in their wake a devastating trail of destitution and hopelessness, especially for children. These young survivors have no politics. They have neither desire for property, prestige or domination over others; rather simply they struggle only to see another day. These orphaned souls face the dangers of hunger and disease along with the constant threats endemic to failed states in the third world, including extremists, human and opium traffickers and other such predators who tak advantage of these helpless children.
The Institute will be a beacon of goodwill in a place that has seen so much negativity and pain, giving many a chance at a real future that otherwise would be incredibly bleak. Real lives will be changed as they are shown what the determination and willingness of compassion can accomplish.
On Thursday, the world’s premier Revolutionary MC will take over the DNA stage, lucidly exposing and attacking injustice with his rhymes and doing even more with financial support. Besides just doing the benefit show Immortal Technique is pledging $10,000 of his own money and traveling to the war torn heartland of Afghanistan to assure the final stages of construction are completed. It will be an opportunity to come and join in before his departure. Be empowered, enlightened, inspired, impassioned and involved in changing and improving the global community. Bay Area and New York members of Technique’s crew will fill opening slots. Doors are at 8:30, show at 9:30. Tickets are $19 in advance and $22 at the door. All ages may attend.

We caught up with Oakland rapper Ras Ceylon and talked to him about his new album ‘Scientific Non Fiction’. It’s his second album and it looks to be a monster.
Among the stand out tracks are cuts he did with Stic Man of dead prez called ‘Better Be Ready’, ‘The Damage’ featuring Tragedy Khadafi and ‘Many Levels’ featuring Bay Area icons Askari X and Taje of Souls of Mischief.
The album is a masterpiece full of socially conscious songs that keep you uplifted and in conversation without being preachy. There is nothing trite about Ras Ceylon and his music. He’s a man of the people who wants us all to advance. His album takes bold steps and will not disappoint.
As for our interview, we started off talking to Ras Ceylon about his background which Sri Lankan and how that culture is often overlooked and misunderstood. We talked to him about him embracing the Rastafarian religion and how it influenced his music.
We also built with Ras about his revolutionary take on politics and why he found it important to hook up with people like Chairman Fred Hampton Jr of the POCC and have him featured on the intro of this album.
Ras is a force to be wreckon with in the years to come. And for those who feel like Hip Hop has lost its sense of adventure and commitment to politics, Ras Ceylon puts those nagging doubts to rest.

13 Minutes Magazine, a bicultural Asian American magazine based in Southern California, will be hosting our 3rd annual fashion show Runway Hits 10pm Friday, October 17, 2008 at Club 740.With another year’s experience under our belts, we are determined to maintain our high fashion, high-energy reputation. This year’s catwalk will feature a mix of three or four key looks from this Fall season and Spring 2009 of each designer’s collection. Designers such as Stella McCartney, Derek Lam, Maxmara, Tadashi, L Space, Ashley Paige, and English Clientele are expected to be included.
The red carpet event will showcase not only the latest trends in fashion, but will also host a variety of talented performers including rap artist Roscoe Umali, known for his hit single “Live it Up” featuring Valentino and E-40, Ras Ceylon performing hit single “Betta B Ready” featuring Stic.man of Dead Prez which has gained worldwide exposure on MTV Jams, MTV-UK, Brit Asia & Much Music Canada, and hip hop dancer’s Kaba Modern from the hit reality show, America’s Best Dance Crew. Last year’s event saw stars from Heroes, CSI, American Idol, Deal or No Deal and the music group Danity Kane grace our red carpet.
